NYS Paid Prenatal Leave
New York’s New Prenatal Leave Law: What Employers Need to Know
Starting January 1, 2025, New York employers with four or more employees must provide paid prenatal leave, becoming the first state to offer this benefit. This new leave option allows eligible employees up to 20 hours annually for healthcare services related to pregnancy, separate from other paid sick leave.
What Does the Law Require?
The prenatal leave can be used for:
Medical Appointments: Including check-ups, monitoring, and consultations.
Flexibility: Leave is available in one-hour increments and paid at the employee’s regular rate.
Employers are encouraged to update their leave policies and train HR and management teams to ensure smooth compliance. Payroll systems must also be adjusted to track and administer this leave accurately.
This law marks a significant step towards supporting working parents and is expected to influence similar measures in other states. For further guidance on compliance and policy updates, reach out to Envision Benefits Group.
